This Part 1/2 of our intervention with Antipode Journal or Radical Geography is the product of a 1-year research project we undertook with activists and communities across the Eastern Mediterranean to examine the region’s gas industry. This article diving into the structures underpinning the Gas Industrial Complex – a network of shared interest of energy corporations, state and military actors – in the region. They are met with fierce resistance.

In this Part 2 of our intervention in the Antipode Jounrnal of Radical Geography we dive into how policing and militarisation drive the global gas boom through encounters with activists from NoTap Meludungo, “Squatted Old Morgue”/κατάληψη Παλιού Νεκροτομείου, Alexandroupoli and members of the village community of Ionninna. These struggles remind us that a world liberated from arms, cops and an exploitative energy model is always possible.

This appeal to the UN Committe on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, submitted in July 2024, summarises concerns regarding the expansion of the seaport in Lüderitz, Namibia, as part of a "green" hydrogen boom in the region. The submitting groups argue that this expansion poses an imminent risk to the site of the former Shark Island concentration camp, a key site in the German colonial genocide perpetrated against the Nama and Ovaherero in the early 20th century.

What happens when Europe’s push for green energy fuels new forms of extraction in the Global South? What does resistance look like on the ground—and how can those of us in Northern Europe stand in meaningful solidarity? Speakers from the Decolonial Center, the Nama Traditional Leaders Association, the Debt Observatory of Globalisation (ODG), and an independent journalist reporting on Tunisia’s hydrogen plans share insights, experiences, and strategies for resisting these harmful projects.

This informal WeSmellGas report describes what fossil gas is, who operates it, and how EU regulations and policy frameworks support its continued use despite climate risks. It explores the influence of corporate actors and regulatory loopholes that enable greenwashing. A second section briefly outlines key facts, definitions, and concepts essential to understanding climate justice in the context of fossil gas expansion. It includes important hyperlinks for further research.

This activist toolkit supports grassroots movements with narrative framing, research, and tactics to challenge energy corporations fueling the settler occupation and genocide in Palestine. It focuses on Dana Petroleum and Eni SpA, awarded illegal gas exploration licenses in Palestinian waters in October 2023, violating international law. The legal parameters offers leverage to pressure these companies and push for a transnational energy embargo to end the genocide and free Palestine.
