Who profits from the green energy rush? Derisking and power relations in Africa’s renewable energy finance
What would a world without the U.S. petrodollar look like, feel like, smell like? Rooted in abolitionist, anti-colonial and anarchist thinking, Julio Linares takes us from the counter of a community bar onto a journey across debt cancellation, community-owned solar currencies and the burning of dollar bills.
This episode is based on the event Gas at the Frontiers of Energy Imperialism organised by Global South United (Instagram) and WeSmellGas on Sunday 5th April 2026 in Berlin. With contributions from Disrupt Power, Afoa Activist Community, Netzwerk Wedding.
War and militarism often go hand in hand with the exploitation of natural resources for profit. In the case of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, we see how capitalist profit and imperialist interests lead to a militarization of land, sea, and people. A clear example of this has been the use of the island to support the Zionist genocide in Palestine and the increasing authoritarian measures against people who organize for a different system.
